Breaking Out of the Box: The Costs of Creating a Comfort Zone and How to Overcome Them

Mary Baker blogpost comfort zone, overcome fear, the box

As human beings, we tend to seek comfort and security in our lives. We create routines, habits, and patterns that help us feel safe and in control of our surroundings. While this can be helpful in some ways, it can also create a box of safety that can limit our growth and potential. Let’s explore the reasons why we create this box of safety and the costs associated with it.

One reason we create a box of safety is fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of failure, and fear of rejection are all common reasons we may choose to stay within our comfort zones. We may avoid taking risks or making changes in our lives because we are afraid of what might happen if we step outside of our box. This fear can be a powerful motivator, but it can also hold us back from achieving our goals and living our best lives.

Another reason we create a box of safety is habit. We often develop routines and patterns that help us feel in control of our lives. These habits can be difficult to break, even if we know they are not serving us well. For example, we may have a habit of staying up late watching TV, even though we know we should be getting more sleep. Breaking this habit can be challenging, but it’s important if we want to make positive changes in our lives.

Perfectionism is another reason we may create a box of safety. We may feel like we need to do everything perfectly, which can lead to procrastination and avoidance. We may put off making decisions or taking action because we are afraid of making mistakes. This can prevent us from learning and growing, and can ultimately hold us back in our personal and professional lives.

So, what are the costs of creating a box of safety? First and foremost, we miss out on opportunities that could improve our lives. We may avoid taking risks that could lead to personal or professional growth. We may miss out on new experiences, relationships, and opportunities that could enrich our lives in countless ways.

Creating a box of safety can also impact our relationships with others. When we stay within our comfort zones, we may miss opportunities to connect with others and form meaningful relationships. We may avoid social situations or shy away from networking opportunities because we feel uncomfortable or out of our element. The irrational beliefs we hold about ourselves are the main culprit here.

Finally, creating a box of safety can impact our sense of self. When we limit ourselves to our comfort zones, we may feel unfulfilled or stagnant. We may feel like we are not living up to our potential or achieving our goals. We KNOW deep down we are not being all that we can be.  This can lead to feelings of frustration, anxiety, and depression. I watch clients who work on this truly come alive and enjoy their life.

Creating a box of safety is a natural human tendency and a , but it can limit our growth and potential. By understanding the reasons why we create this box, we can begin to take steps to break out of it. By taking risks, embracing change, and challenging ourselves, we can open ourselves up to new experiences, relationships, and opportunities that can enrich our lives in countless ways.

Because when there’s no task, no distraction, no one else’s needs to manage… that’s when the noise shows up. The racing thoughts. The guilt. The “shoulds.” The deep […]

When Survival Mode Becomes a Way of Life

If you’re always waiting for the next shoe to drop, it’s time to ask—what part of me doesn’t feel safe? We’re not meant to live with our shoulders up to our ears. But for many of us, being “on edge” has become the norm. You might call it anxiety, overthinking, or burnout, but often, it’s […]

You Can’t Be Honest When You’re Bracing for Impact

We all want to be emotionally honest. To speak up when something hurts, to ask for what we need, to be seen and understood for who we really are. But here’s the truth: honesty doesn’t happen in a vacuum. You can’t be emotionally honest when you’re constantly bracing for criticism, correction, or shutdown. And you […]
