Need It? Own It! The Power of Taking Responsibility for Your Needs

Mary Baker blogpost needs, power, responsibility

Expressing needs in a healthy way is crucial for maintaining healthy relationships. Whether it’s in a romantic partnership, friendship, or family relationship, communicating our needs effectively can help ensure that our relationships are strong and meaningful. Taking ownership of ourselves not creates emotional safety, but builds our confidence in ourselves. Here are some tips on how to express your needs in a healthy way:

  1. Be clear and specific: It’s important to communicate your needs in a clear and specific manner. This allows your partner or loved one to fully understand what it is that you need from them. For example, instead of saying “I need more help around the house,” try saying “I need you to do the dishes every night after dinner.”
  2. Use “I” statements: When expressing your needs, use “I” statements instead of “you” statements. This helps to avoid putting blame on the other person and makes the conversation feel less confrontational. For example, instead of saying “You never spend time with me,” try saying “I feel lonely when we don’t spend time together.”
  3. Be respectful: It’s important to be respectful of the other person’s feelings and needs as well. When expressing your needs, be mindful of how the other person may react and be open to compromise. This helps to create a healthy and supportive dynamic in the relationship. These “boundary agreements” create the emotional safety
  4. Be honest: Honesty is key when it comes to expressing needs in a healthy way. Be emotionally honest about what you need and why you need it. Keep it about you, not about them. This helps to build trust and understanding between you and your loved one.
  5. Practice active listening: When your loved one expresses their needs, practice active listening. This means really hearing what they are saying and trying to understand where they are coming from. This helps to create a sense of mutual respect and support in the relationship.
  6. Don’t be afraid to ask for help: If you’re struggling to express your needs in a healthy way, don’t be afraid to ask for help. This can be from a therapist, a trusted friend, or a self-help book. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help when you need it.

Expressing needs can feel scary at first, because you are making yourself vulnerable. But when you start doing it in a healthy way, you will feel the difference! By being clear and specific, using “I” statements, being respectful, honest, practicing active listening, and asking for help when needed, you bring more of “you” into the relationship and create better connections with others.

When Sitting Still Feels Unsafe: The Fear Beneath the Stillness

Most people don’t talk about how uncomfortable it can be to just be. To sit still. To slow down. To be quiet for even a few minutes. Because when there’s no task, no distraction, no one else’s needs to manage… that’s when the noise shows up. The racing thoughts. The guilt. The “shoulds.” The deep […]

If you’re always waiting for the next shoe to drop, it’s time to ask—what part of me doesn’t feel safe? We’re not meant to live with our shoulders up to our ears. But for many of us, being “on edge” has become the norm. You might call it anxiety, overthinking, or burnout, but often, it’s […]

You Can’t Be Honest When You’re Bracing for Impact

We all want to be emotionally honest. To speak up when something hurts, to ask for what we need, to be seen and understood for who we really are. But here’s the truth: honesty doesn’t happen in a vacuum. You can’t be emotionally honest when you’re constantly bracing for criticism, correction, or shutdown. And you […]
