Why Just Doing It Changes Everything

Mary Baker blogpost action, Beliefs, change, choice, Do It, empowerment, episode, goals, ownitpowercast, Perception, Perfectionism, procrastination, self-discipline

So this month on the podcast we are all about how to remove the energy drainers in your life. You know – all those things you want take care of, confront, address etc but just haven’t gotten around to it. Usually this is because of beliefs you hold about yourself, about others, and about life. Perhaps you struggle with the three P’s: Perfectionism (because it HAS to be just right), which leads to Procrastination (because that’s a hella lot of pressure!) and thus Paralysis, because knowing how and where to start doing the aforementioned Perfect Thing Perfectly well…it make you want grab a paper bag.

But I think part of the remedy we talk about on today’s episode is about toggling between digging into distorted beliefs and wounds that prevent yu from starting, but mixed with just Doing It. I am a big believer of just doing it, having struggled with procrastination for years, because it works. And here’s why it does.

1. Beginning to Take Action Changes Your Perception of Self. When you experiment with different actions. When you just begin, you are creating experiential data your brain cannot argue with because now you are someone who gets started. Who is serious. And capable. And wants a different life.

2. You Feel Better Following Through. You are showing yourself that you are capable and willing to commit to yourself, even when you are unsure of how to do it. You are at least starting to complete things, even if the bigger fish you want to fry seem intimidating. For example, maybe the big fish is decluttering the entire house. You have to start somewhere though, so you follow through on at least cleaning out the hall closet. It’s a great start, and it will motivate you to do more!

3. More things are revealed you couldn’t have known. We can project out all we want, but sometimes the best information is gleaned from doing, or experiencing something, especially if it’s a new behavior or one you think you’re not great at, like maybe organizing. But trying different things out with say, organizing your desk at work, you will beta test this by using the new way for a week.. You will see what worked, what didn’t; and what you want to do differently. This is huge, because now you are in the grey, in the middle, in the not-so-perfect but just fine place of trying. Letting things play out. Deciding. Empowered, which is the opposite of fear in my book.

4. So Now You Are Working Through the Anxiety Of Doing it Perfectly. Or horrible. Or Not At All. See- you are telling the fear where to go when you are showing it that yes, you can do this thank-you-very-much, and pretty damn well too! Look at you! You have more talent than you think.

These are just a few reasons why just starting can be so important for change. Taking the first step makes it real, and a real possibility that things can be different for you. You are proving to yourself that you are ready for things to be better, despite any old fears or distorted beliefs you may hold.

You get the final say in how much effort you are willing to put forth. So yes do the deep healing work, but also know that just by doing things differently there’s healing to be had there too.

When Sitting Still Feels Unsafe: The Fear Beneath the Stillness

Most people don’t talk about how uncomfortable it can be to just be. To sit still. To slow down. To be quiet for even a few minutes. Because when there’s no task, no distraction, no one else’s needs to manage… that’s when the noise shows up. The racing thoughts. The guilt. The “shoulds.” The deep […]

When Survival Mode Becomes a Way of Life

If you’re always waiting for the next shoe to drop, it’s time to ask—what part of me doesn’t feel safe? We’re not meant to live with our shoulders up to our ears. But for many of us, being “on edge” has become the norm. You might call it anxiety, overthinking, or burnout, but often, it’s […]

You Can’t Be Honest When You’re Bracing for Impact

We all want to be emotionally honest. To speak up when something hurts, to ask for what we need, to be seen and understood for who we really are. But here’s the truth: honesty doesn’t happen in a vacuum. You can’t be emotionally honest when you’re constantly bracing for criticism, correction, or shutdown. And you […]
