Learning to Listen to Yourself Again

Have you ever looked back on a situation and thought:

“I knew.”

Not because you had proof.

Not because you could explain it.

Not because you had a perfectly logical argument.

You just knew.

Maybe it was a relationship that didn’t feel right.

A friendship that left you drained.

A job that looked great on paper but made your stomach tighten every Sunday night.

A decision that everyone else supported but something inside you resisted.

And maybe you ignored it.

Not because you were foolish.

But because you couldn’t explain it.

So you talked yourself out of it.

After all, you didn’t have evidence.

You didn’t have facts.

You didn’t have a good enough reason.

You just had a feeling.

For many people, that’s where the disconnect begins.

We learn to trust logic and evidence while dismissing intuition and inner knowing.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Logic matters.

Facts matter.

Evidence matters.

But intuition matters too.

The problem is that many of us were taught not to trust it.

Maybe you grew up in an environment where your feelings were dismissed.

Maybe you were told you were too sensitive.

Maybe your concerns were minimized.

Maybe someone repeatedly convinced you that what you were seeing wasn’t actually happening.

Over time, you learn a painful lesson:

Don’t trust yourself.

Trust someone else’s interpretation instead.

This is one of the reasons people who have experienced emotional manipulation or gaslighting often struggle to hear themselves clearly.

Gaslighting doesn’t just change how you see a situation.

It changes how you see yourself.

You stop asking:

“What am I noticing?”

And start asking:

“Am I crazy?”

You stop wondering:

“What feels off?”

And start wondering:

“What’s wrong with me?”

Eventually, you become disconnected from one of the most important sources of information available to you.

Your own experience.

The interesting thing about intuition is that it often speaks quietly.

It rarely arrives with a PowerPoint presentation.

It doesn’t always have bullet points and supporting documentation.

Sometimes it shows up as tension in your body.

A sense of unease.

A feeling that something doesn’t fit.

A recurring thought that won’t leave you alone.

A persistent feeling of resistance.

The challenge is that intuition often arrives before understanding.

You feel it before you can explain it.

And that’s exactly why people learn to dismiss it.

Because we live in a world that rewards certainty.

But intuition often starts as uncertainty.

A whisper.

A question.

A nudge.

Not a conclusion.

Learning to listen to yourself again doesn’t mean blindly following every feeling.

It means becoming curious about what you’re experiencing instead of immediately arguing with it.

Instead of saying:

“That’s ridiculous.”

Try asking:

“What am I noticing?”

Instead of saying:

“I shouldn’t feel this way.”

Try asking:

“What is this feeling trying to tell me?”

Instead of saying:

“I have no reason to think that.”

Try asking:

“What information might I be picking up that I haven’t fully processed yet?”

Sometimes your intuition will be right.

Sometimes it won’t.

But rebuilding trust with yourself means allowing your inner experience to have a seat at the table.

Not the only seat.

But a seat.

One of the clearest signs that you’re reconnecting with yourself is that you stop dismissing your own observations so quickly. You take a moment…or twenty…

You stop treating your feelings as evidence that something is wrong with you.

You stop assuming everyone else knows better. (Yes, even though you might not believe you do that on the face of it, look for how in the past you might have ever-so-subtly changed your mind or dismissed your truth – often without even realizing it!)

You start listening.

You start noticing.

You start trusting yourself enough to become curious. Just a little bit.

And when you do, something remarkable happens.

You realize that the voice you’ve been searching for has been there all along.

It wasn’t missing.

It was simply being talked over. Maybe dismissed, muted, rationalized or ignored.

Now, this is NOT the time to then sit in shame or guilt when you realize you’ve been disconnected from your truth.  Remember, we don’t do that for no reason, and unhealthy people and situations created that necessity.

Healing is about giving yourself compassion, some time to yourself to be quiet and to be able to hear the voice inside, and becoming more open and willing to listen to it.

Since I know you might be hesitant at first to follow through with what it tells you, practice with small, benign decisions, like what store to walk into or what to grab to eat…that quiet nudge to reach out and text a friend, etc. That way, you gain experience with the “proof” of following

Sometimes it’s about becoming quiet enough to hear yourself again.

What Doesn’t Fit Anymore? 10 Things You May Have Outgrown

Sometimes we stay with things long after they’ve stopped fitting us…not because they’re necessarily terrible, but because they’re familiar. A relationship, a role, a goal, a way of spending our time, even an identity can make perfect sense for one season of our lives and feel completely different in another. But admitting that can be […]
