Healing the Heart and Gut: The Power of Feeling It All

Mary Baker blogpost feeling it all, gut, healing, heart

In the pursuit of personal growth and emotional well-being, we often hear phrases like “stay positive” or “keep your chin up.” While maintaining a positive attitude is undoubtedly valuable, it’s equally essential to acknowledge and honor our emotions—the full spectrum of them. As my mentor wisely said, “you can’t heal what isn’t real, and it isn’t real until you feel it.” In this blog post, we’ll explore the profound wisdom behind these words and delve into the importance of feeling and embracing our emotions—both in our hearts and in our guts.

The Role of Emotions:

Emotions are the essence of our human experience. They are the colors that paint the canvas of our lives, providing depth, richness, and meaning to our journey. Emotions are not mere fleeting sensations; they are messengers from our inner selves, carrying valuable insights and wisdom. They are a big part of us.

Connecting Beyond the Head:

Your head can analyze, strategize, and problem-solve, but it’s in your heart and gut where you truly connect with the essence of your emotions. Emotions are felt, not thought. When you experience them in your heart and gut, you’re sitting in the raw, unfiltered truth of your inner world. It’s here that you can truly understand and process feelings like deep fear, loss, joy, pain, wonder, disappointment, regret, and yearning.

The Courage to Feel:

Embracing your emotions requires courage. It means allowing yourself to sit in the discomfort of vulnerability and uncertainty. It means acknowledging that it’s okay not to be okay at times. Avoiding or suppressing emotions may provide temporary relief, but it often leads to long-term emotional baggage.

Healing Through Connection:

When you allow yourself to feel, you open the door to healing and growth. Here’s how:

Understanding and Acceptance: Feeling emotions fully helps you understand them better. You can’t heal what you don’t acknowledge. By acknowledging your feelings, you accept yourself as you are, flaws and all.

Release and Transformation: Emotions in your heart and gut can be powerful catalysts for change. They can lead to personal growth, increased self-awareness, and a deeper understanding of your needs and desires.

Connection with Others: Emotions are the bridge to connecting with others on a profound level. When you allow yourself to feel, you create authentic connections based on empathy and shared human experiences.

Resilience: Embracing your emotions cultivates emotional resilience. It’s the ability to bounce back from life’s challenges with newfound strength and wisdom. It’s about honoring your TRUTH and a lot of that truth is what you are honestly experiencing.

Sitting in the Sh*t:

As my mentor suggested, sometimes you need to “sit in the sh*t.” This means being present with your emotions, even the uncomfortable ones. It means letting go of judgment and allowing yourself to be human—imperfect, vulnerable, and real.

In a culture that often values strength as the absence of vulnerability, remember that true strength lies in embracing your emotions, in feeling them deeply in your heart and gut. It’s through this emotional journey that you can heal, connect, and grow, transforming life’s challenges into opportunities for a richer, more authentic existence. So, embrace your emotions, sit in the sh*t when you must, and let your heart and gut guide you towards a life filled with meaning, connection, and profound growth.

Why Support Isn’t Just Nice to Have – It’s What Makes Courage Possible We often talk about self-belief like it’s something you build in isolation. Just try harder, think more positively, do the work. There’s a quiet kind of burnout that creeps in slowly, one boundary-less day at a time.It doesn’t always come from major life events or overwhelming trauma.Sometimes, it comes from saying “yes” when we’re tired. From taking on just one more thing, because we feel like we should. From holding everything together so well on the outside […]
