How to Use Fear to Move Forward!

Mary Baker blogpost chunk it down, fear, identify, move forward

By Keryn Young

As we come to the close of another month in our journey of life, I thought it fitting to switch things up and talk about how to use your fear to propel yourself forward in life. Regardless of what is going on in my life, I have found that a positive mindset makes all the difference in the world. While I have found fear to be paralyzing at times, equally I have harnessed it and used it as a powerful motivator to move forward in life.  Below are some strategies to use fear in a constructive way:

The biggest key is to recognize and understand your fear: identify the specific fears that are holding you back. Is it fear of failure, rejection, or the unknown? By making time to understand the root cause of your fear, it allows you to address it more effectively.

Set Clear Goals: Get crystal clear on what you want to achieve. Establish specific, actionable goals. Clarity and a clear direction give you a roadmap to focus on. It also helps to shift your attention away from fear.

Chunk It Down: Many a time fear has felt overwhelming when I looked at the big picture. Again, break down your goals into smaller, manageable (bite sized) tasks. Taking one step at a time, you gradually build confidence and momentum, shrinking the power of fear.

Develop a Plan: Create a well-thought-out action plan. Having a strategy in place helps to alleviate uncertainty and gives you a sense of control over the situation. This can provide a framework to work within, making it easier to confront your fears and move forward.

Take Calculated Risks: Understand that growth often requires stepping out of your comfort zone. Embrace the idea of taking calculated risks. Assess the potential benefits and drawbacks of each decision and be willing to embrace the possibility of failure (how not to do something) as a learning opportunity.

Challenge Your Beliefs: Fear is often fueled by limiting beliefs and negative self-talk. Challenge those beliefs by questioning their validity and replacing them with more empowering and positive thoughts. Affirmations and visualization techniques can also be helpful in rewiring your mindset.

Seek Support: Surround yourself with a supportive network of friends, family, or mentors who can provide encouragement, guidance, and accountability. Personally, I think everyone should have a coach in their corner.  Sharing your fears and goals with trusted individuals can help alleviate some of the fear and provide valuable insights.

Take Action and Embrace Discomfort: Ultimately, the most important step is to take action despite your fear. Embrace the discomfort and move forward, knowing that fear is a natural part of growth. Each small step you take will gradually diminish the power of fear and build your confidence.

Learn from Failures: View failures as learning experiences rather than as indicators of personal inadequacy. Analyze what went wrong, extract valuable lessons, and use that knowledge to adjust your approach. Failure can be a stepping-stone towards success if you allow yourself to learn and grow from it.

Remember, fear is a natural human emotion, and using it as a driving force requires practice and patience. Be kind to yourself throughout the process and celebrate even the smallest victories. With time and effort, you can harness fear as a tool for personal growth and progress in your life.

Remember that fear is a natural human emotion. To harness it as a driving force requires practice and a whole lot of patience. BE KIND to yourself as you go through the process. CELEBRATE the tiniest victories. Given time, awareness and action you can harness fear as a tool for personal growth and forward momentum in life. Me, I am excited to get my quantum leap on.

Looking forward to seeing you all rising up!

When Sitting Still Feels Unsafe: The Fear Beneath the Stillness

Most people don’t talk about how uncomfortable it can be to just be. To sit still. To slow down. To be quiet for even a few minutes. Because when there’s no task, no distraction, no one else’s needs to manage… that’s when the noise shows up. The racing thoughts. The guilt. The “shoulds.” The deep […]

When Survival Mode Becomes a Way of Life

If you’re always waiting for the next shoe to drop, it’s time to ask—what part of me doesn’t feel safe? We’re not meant to live with our shoulders up to our ears. But for many of us, being “on edge” has become the norm. You might call it anxiety, overthinking, or burnout, but often, it’s […]

You Can’t Be Honest When You’re Bracing for Impact

We all want to be emotionally honest. To speak up when something hurts, to ask for what we need, to be seen and understood for who we really are. But here’s the truth: honesty doesn’t happen in a vacuum. You can’t be emotionally honest when you’re constantly bracing for criticism, correction, or shutdown. And you […]
