Ways to Build a Strong Inner Voice

Mary Baker blogpost feelings, inner voice, self-care, your truth

We talk on the show today about how important it is to build a healthy relationship with your inner truth, and how it is necessary to validate what you think, feel and need on the inside so you can present a strong outer voice in your daily life. If that sounds like a tall order, then read on to find ways to break it down into daily bite-size ways to make it happen.

First: Tap Into Your Truth…Daily. What I mean by this is take a few moments throughout the day to just check in with yourself.  How are you feeling? How is your body…is it relaxed, hungry, stressed, aching, or fatigued? What about emotionally? Just ask yourself what you might be feeling, such as anxious, lonely fatigued, energized, or content? Are you feeling happy, sad or unsettled? A bit pissed maybe.  Getting specific can really help you nail down what you are truly feeling, especially for those of you who simply answer “fine” or maybe “a bit stressed” to those who ask.

Next: Validate Your Experience. Say to yourself why it makes sense that you feel what you feel and your why your body is where it is today.  Describe the recent circumstances, along with a gentle reminder that maybe you’ve been going too hard lately.  Or doing too much. Or not taking care of your health like you need to.  Perhaps what is going on is more stressful than you had realized, since you were just trying to get through it.  Those of you with kids are probably used to putting the game face on for them, so as not to burden them during difficult times.

Third: Honor Your Needs.  Once you figure out how you feel and what state your body and psyche are in, it’s time to address what you might need to begin feeling more rested, centered or at least saner. Maybe it’s time for some basic self-care, such as setting boundaries around how much sleep you can grab, eating a bit better and getting some exercise.  Sometimes we just need to turn off, to take a break or take a walk.  Sometimes we need to ask for help when we are doing too much ourselves.

Just taking time throughout the day to assess what is going on is in itself is a way you are showing yourself you are in tune, and that you care about your own well-being. Validating what you feel and need is even more important to building self-trust and self-confidence. By doing so, you strengthen your inner voice, which translates into a stronger, more confident outer one in your relationships.

When Is It a Mistake, and When Is It a Pattern? We all have moments we’re not particularly proud of. We lose our patience. We say something we wish we hadn’t. We get defensive, shut down, overreact, or fail to consider how our behavior affects someone else. Sometimes we’re tired. Sometimes we’re overwhelmed. Sometimes old […]

You Can Hear Someone’s Feelings Without Defending Yourself

Have you ever had someone tell you how hurt, angry, or disappointed they were, and immediately felt the need to explain yourself? Maybe they said you were being selfish. Or inconsiderate. Or that you clearly didn’t care about them. And suddenly, instead of listening to what they’re feeling, you’re busy defending who you are. Because you do […]

When Being the Helper Keeps You From Being Known

Are you the helper? The person everyone turns to when they’re struggling? The one who listens, offers advice, figures things out, makes things happen, and somehow always finds a way to be there? Maybe you’re really good at it. Maybe people regularly tell you how strong, generous, dependable, or selfless you are. And maybe you […]

My passion has been to help others uncover who they truly are, lay claim to their gifts and passions, and ultimately, their purpose. Because, I believe, a sense of purpose is what brings life, gets us out of bed and helps us to make sense of an otherwise stressful and overwhelming world.
