What’s Your Vibe? How You Show Up Matters to Your Relationships

Mary Baker blogpost body language, energy, relationship, Vibe

One of the things we’ve been focusing on this month on the podcast is how to stop the chaos in our life that has us running around, too busy to be present and too stressed to relax.  Since we are so preoccupied with all the overwhelm and getting things done, we probably aren’t paying much attention to how we come across to others. What vibe do we have most days?  Does it change according to our environment (that’s a whole ‘nother blog) and would we like to be around said vibe if it were someone we knew?

Your Body Language.  What does yours say?  Is it open and relaxed yet confident? Or is it a bit closed off or unsure.  How eager are people to want to come toward you?  Do you move toward them at all in a caring way?  Is there eye contact and warmth? How we sit, walk and carry ourselves says so much about us. If you aren’t convinced, watch a video or a show with the sound off and notice how much more you pay attention to what people are doing to try to figure out emotion, etc.

Your Actual Language. This is something I don’t think we pay too much attention to having a negative vibe outside of the obvious overt actions such as shaming, yelling or cursing at someone.  We may not realize that just how we say things really matters.  Our tone, what we are insinuating or avoiding or implying.  If we take a victim stance, use too much sarcasm, or talk about other people we may be keeping others at arm’s length and not know it.  Emotional honesty, vulnerability, and positivity when appropriate makes us more welcoming.

While we certainly want to just be ourselves as much as we can, it is also important that we pay attention to how we connect with others, and what kind of energy we bring into the room.  Our demeanor, outside of something happening that is very upsetting, should be open, connecting and inviting.  We are made for relationship, and yet many of us struggle to bond even though we want to.  Being more mindful and intentional about how we interact can make a big difference.

Action Builds Confidence: Why Change Doesn’t Happen Through Thinking Alone

Most people don’t struggle because they don’t know enough. They struggle because knowing and doing are two very different things. You can read the books. Listen to the podcasts. Journal. Reflect. Understand exactly why you do what you do. And still find yourself stuck. Not because you’re failing. Not because you’re lazy. But because growth […]

You Can’t Heal in Isolation (Because You Learned to Survive There)

Most people don’t decide to isolate. They don’t wake up one day and think, “I’d rather do life on my own, keep things to myself, and figure everything out alone.” It happens slowly. Quietly. And usually…early. What looks like independence on the outside is often something much deeper on the inside. Because for a lot […]

The Hidden Roles That Still Shape Your Relationships

Not all roles are obvious. Some look responsible. Some look helpful. Some even look confident. But underneath? They were ways of coping. Ways of navigating environments where something didn’t feel safe, stable, or predictable. In my last post, we talked about roles like the peacekeeper, the fixer, and the over-responsible one. But there are other […]
