Stop Asking Everyone: Why it’s Hard to Trust Your Inner Wisdom

Mary Baker blogpost 2020, Believe, empowerment, episode, Higher Wisdom, Inner GPS, Inner Wisdom, Intuition, listen, Manipulated, podcast, Quiet, trust yourself, Trusting, truth

Ever agonized over a big decision? Or maybe every decision is an exhausting experience…either way, there are reasons that taking a risk, trusting yourself for trusting your divine wisdom may be hard. On the podcast today I talk about the concepts of intuition and your inner GPS, and why sometimes you might not follow it.

Polling everyone else instead of trusting yourself. You know what I mean. After agonizing and obsessing, you have since bent the ear of everyone you know to ask them what they think you should do. Usually you get a bunch of conflicting opinions that ALL make sense.   Here’s the problem:  Each of those wonderful human beings can only provide their opinions, which are colored by their own perceptions and their own experiences. Therefore, it’s hard for them to be objective no matter how much they try to be.

They’re too close to you. The elephant in the room oftentimes is the fact that they very well may be impacted by your decision, perhaps in a negative way. They may have to make changes themselves, or deal with feelings of jealousy or fear you will outgrow them or move away from them if you take this big risk. What if you outgrow them? They may feel protective of you as well, not wanting you to be disappointed if it doesn’t work out the way you want it to.

There’s also the possibility that early in life you’ve been manipulated out of trusting what you need, think and feel. As I have mentioned on the podcast, slowly over time you lose yourself. You lose your trust in your intuition, you’re thinking and what you are feeling. You lose contact with the quiet confidence that is there when we feel more grounded.

Maybe you’ve been shamed around the concept of trusting something you can’t touch or see. That you should always rely on logic and facts, not funny feelings or nudges that don’t (at least not yet) make sense.

Spiritual abuse can be another reason. Being dealt with the blows of shame and guilt can really harm a person, especially their belief in something greater than themselves that won’t judge or harm them. Another spiritual wound can be the idea that shouldn’t be an independent thinker nor should you trust your gut.

So whether you are a true believer in a higher wisdom, or stick to science and facts only or just not sure, my hope is that you at least listen to your inner knowing no matter where it comes from. Taking time for some quiet is the most important part – and the one we can actually do.
