Mastering Boundaries: The Power of Consistency

Mary Baker blogpost Boundaries, commitment, consistency, power

Setting the boundary is just the beginning of the journey—a pivotal moment of clarity and assertion. It’s that powerful instant when you declare to yourself and the world, “This is where I draw the line.” But here’s the truth: the real challenge, the true test of resilience, lies in maintaining that boundary. The only way to make it real and true is to hold that line you drew.  This takes more courage and commitment than it does to just cave, or tweak, or forget your boundary as time goes on.

Staying True When It’s Tough:

In the initial surge of empowerment that comes with setting a boundary, it can feel like you’ve conquered a mountain. Yet, as time goes on and the initial emotions settle, the real work begins. Now, it’s on you to remember what you said your limit was and to hold fast to it.

Imagine a ship at sea, navigating through turbulent waters. Setting the boundary was like adjusting the sails to steer clear of danger. But maintaining it? That’s the steady hand on the tiller, the unwavering course despite the storm. This is especially difficult if you’re new to setting boundaries and all the mental and emotional work that goes into it.

The Challenge of Consistency:

Consistency is the heartbeat of effective boundary maintenance. It’s about showing up for yourself, day after day, and honoring the commitment you made. This can be particularly challenging when the initial emotions have faded, and the situation seems less urgent. Think of it this way: consistency is like the foundation of a sturdy house. It provides stability and structure, ensuring that your boundaries remain firm and unwavering. When you consistently uphold your boundaries, you send a powerful message—to yourself and others—that your needs matter.

The Importance of Your Voice:

Your consistency speaks volumes. It communicates to the world that you value yourself enough to stand by your boundaries, even when it’s uncomfortable. This is not about rigidity or inflexibility—it’s about self-respect and self-care. Changing boundaries constantly can be confusing, especially for those around you. It sends mixed signals and undermines the trust that others have in your words. Conversely, maintaining consistent boundaries creates a sense of safety and predictability in your relationships.

Tips for Maintaining Boundaries:

Remember Your Why: Keep in mind the reasons behind your boundary. Whether it’s to protect your time, energy, or emotional well-being, your ‘why’ fuels your commitment. This helps get you into the thinking part of your brain, and out of your fight/flight/freeze/fawn place.  It also helps you feel more empowered, choosing to honor what matters most to you, and increases self-trust. I think it also helps you quell your fears about doing the right thing.

Practice Self-Check-Ins: Regularly assess how you’re feeling about your boundaries. Are they still serving you? Do adjustments need to be made? What new things are you learning and realizing as you do this work?

Seek Support: Share your boundaries with trusted friends or family members who also practice setting boundaries so they understand what you are doing. Having a support system can provide encouragement and accountability and I think is a must-have if you are going to do this work.  We cannot do it alone.

Stay Grounded in Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself when maintaining boundaries gets tough. Remember that it’s a journey, and slip-ups are a natural part of growth. All the fears you’ve had are there for a reason, and they’re from unhealthy experiences in the past. Don’t give up, and know that this is a process, and not a perfect one.

Setting boundaries is an act of self-empowerment but maintaining them is where the true strength lies. It’s about showing up for yourself, honoring your needs, and valuing your voice. Remember, your consistency speaks volumes—it sets the tone for how others treat you and how you treat yourself. So, as you navigate the waters of boundary maintenance, stay true to your course. Hold fast to your boundaries, even when the seas are rough. Your unwavering commitment to self-respect and self-care will pave the way for healthier relationships and a more empowered you.
