Fear and Your Authentic Self – Are you Connected or Not Connected? – It’s a Game Changer

Mary Baker blogpost authentic self, connected to self, fear, game changer

Typical me, choosing the challenging option to talk about.  Why? It is challenging because for most of my life I have wrestled with just that BEing or knowing who my authentic self is. My own journey of self-discovery has been a fraught gauntlet. The outcome to date is that –my unapologetic authentic self is priceless.  The mission – to ensure that everyone is able to BE their authentic self, from children to grandparents.

Not so long ago, I was NOT connected to my authentic self. For me, it takes daily intention and awareness to stay authentically myself. Replacing old patterns of behaviour with new ones takes practice…and yes, it feels freaking weird, uncomfortable and foreign when you start. Please know, that new patterns of behaviour become the “norm” and one feels like you are arriving “home”.

What I have learned when I am not connected to my authentic self is that the lack can contribute to manifesting FEAR (there it is again) in various ways. I figured that sharing these will open the space for understanding, change, growth and life being that teeny bit easier. I am the eternal optimist, if one person has an aha moment, life is good.

Disconnection can give rise to fear:

Fear of judgment and rejection: When individuals are disconnected from their authentic selves, they may fear being judged, rejected, or criticized by others. They might present a false persona or conform to societal expectations to gain acceptance.

Fear of vulnerability: Authenticity often involves being open, vulnerable, and honest about one’s thoughts, feelings, and experiences. When individuals are disconnected from their authentic selves, they may fear being vulnerable and exposing their true emotions or insecurities. This fear can stem from concerns about being hurt, rejected, or taken advantage of.

Fear of failure: Lack of connection with one’s authentic self can contribute to a fear of failure. When individuals are disconnected from their true desires, passions, and values, they may find themselves pursuing paths or goals that do not align with their authentic aspirations. This mismatch can lead to anxiety and fear of not living up to their potential or experiencing regret later in life.

Fear of authenticity itself: Paradoxically, individuals who are disconnected from their authentic selves may also fear the process of reconnecting and embracing their true identity. This fear may arise from a fear of change, fear of facing uncomfortable emotions or unresolved issues, or fear of challenging existing belief systems and social norms.

Fear of losing connection with others: In some cases, individuals may fear that if they express their authentic selves, they may lose connections or relationships with others. This fear of abandonment or rejection can create anxiety and prevent them from fully exploring and embracing their authentic identity.

I have experienced all of the above at one time or another. Has it been easy no. Is it doable? Heck yes! Exploring and reconnecting with one’s authentic self through self-reflection, therapy, and self-acceptance can help you to alleviate fear and lead more fulfilling and authentic lives.

Who I am today is a bolder, braver, empowered, engaged, relatable soul, able to use all the tools in my toolbox to be more intentional with my life, minimize the potholes (I have had a few massive ones) on my journey of life, cope with and work through the challenges times.

Do the mahi (work), you get the rewards! Make yourself the priority to discover and BE your authentic self.

Are You Saying What You Mean—or Hoping They’ll Figure It Out? How Emotional Honesty Builds Connection

We talk a lot about communication. We say we need to communicate better. We wish other people would communicate better. We get frustrated when someone doesn’t understand us, doesn’t respond the way we hoped, or seems completely oblivious to what we’re trying to tell them. But here’s a question worth sitting with: Did you actually […]

What Doesn’t Fit Anymore? 10 Things You May Have Outgrown

Sometimes we stay with things long after they’ve stopped fitting us…not because they’re necessarily terrible, but because they’re familiar. A relationship, a role, a goal, a way of spending our time, even an identity can make perfect sense for one season of our lives and feel completely different in another. But admitting that can be […]

What Are Your Non-Negotiables? Getting Specific About What You Will (and Won’t) Allow in Your Life

We hear phrases like these all the time: Know your worth. Don’t tolerate disrespect. Protect your peace. Have boundaries. I agree with all of them. But there’s a problem. What do they actually mean? What does “respect” look like on an ordinary Tuesday afternoon? What exactly are you no longer willing to tolerate? What does […]
