Confidence is Key: How to Learn to Trust Your Choices

Mary Baker blogpost Choices, confidence, decisions, trust

Making decisions is a natural part of life, and we make choices every day that impact our lives and the lives of those around us. While some decisions may seem insignificant, others can have a significant impact on our future. However, despite our best efforts, it can be difficult to trust our choices. Here are some reasons why:

  1. Fear of making mistakes.  One of the biggest reasons why it can be hard to trust our choices is the fear of making mistakes. We worry that we’ll make the wrong decision, and that it will have negative consequences for ourselves or others. This fear can be paralyzing, making it hard to make any decision at all.
  2. Lack of confidence.  Another reason why it can be hard to trust our choices is a lack of confidence. We may doubt our own abilities or feel like we don’t have enough information to make an informed decision. This lack of confidence can lead us to seek validation from others, rather than trusting our own judgment.
  3. Past experiences.  Our past experiences can also impact our ability to trust our choices. If we’ve made decisions in the past that didn’t turn out well, we may be hesitant to trust our own judgment again. This can lead us to rely on others to make decisions for us, rather than taking responsibility for our own choices.
  4. Pressure from others.  Sometimes, the pressure from others can make it hard to trust our choices. We may feel like we need to please others or worry about what they’ll think of us if we make a certain choice. This pressure can be overwhelming and can make it difficult to make a decision that’s truly in our best interests.

So, what can we do to overcome these challenges and learn to trust our choices?

  1. Recognize your fears.  The first step is to recognize your fears and acknowledge that they’re holding you back. Once you identify your fears, you can work to address them and develop strategies to overcome them.
  2. Build your confidence.  Building your confidence can help you trust your own judgment. Focus on your strengths and remind yourself of times when you’ve made good decisions in the past. Surround yourself with positive influences and seek out opportunities to learn and grow.
  3. Learn from past experiences.  Rather than letting past experiences hold you back, use them as opportunities to learn and grow. Reflect on what went wrong and use that knowledge to make better decisions in the future. Also remember as you get healthier and more confident, you will be making better decisions going forward.
  4. Set boundaries.  Setting boundaries can help you make decisions that are truly in your best interests, rather than simply trying to please others. Learn to say no when necessary and surround yourself with people who support your choices.

While it can be hard to trust our choices, it’s important to remember that we are capable of making good decisions. By recognizing our fears, building our confidence, learning from past experiences, and setting boundaries, we can overcome the challenges that hold us back and learn to trust our own judgment.

We talk a lot about communication. We say we need to communicate better. We wish other people would communicate better. We get frustrated when someone doesn’t understand us, doesn’t respond the way we hoped, or seems completely oblivious to what we’re trying to tell them. But here’s a question worth sitting with: Did you actually […]

What Doesn’t Fit Anymore? 10 Things You May Have Outgrown

Sometimes we stay with things long after they’ve stopped fitting us…not because they’re necessarily terrible, but because they’re familiar. A relationship, a role, a goal, a way of spending our time, even an identity can make perfect sense for one season of our lives and feel completely different in another. But admitting that can be […]

What Are Your Non-Negotiables? Getting Specific About What You Will (and Won’t) Allow in Your Life

We hear phrases like these all the time: Know your worth. Don’t tolerate disrespect. Protect your peace. Have boundaries. I agree with all of them. But there’s a problem. What do they actually mean? What does “respect” look like on an ordinary Tuesday afternoon? What exactly are you no longer willing to tolerate? What does […]
